Léon INDENBAUM (1892-1980) - Lot 217
Léon INDENBAUM (1892-1980) Woman's torso - 1919 Black patina bronze proof, monogrammed L.I, foundry stamp J.D.V, La Plaine fondeur, n° 7/8 75 x 25.6 x 20.2 cm NB. Made from the original terracotta. Posthumous edition limited to 8 copies, two hors commerce proofs and two artist's proofs, with authorization from the heirs of the moral rights. Provenance: Mr. ENAV, painter and friend of Léon Indenbaum (terracotta). Bibliography: Indenbaum, A. Basler, Ed. Le Triangle, 1930, p. 27 (terracotta). Style 1930 by Klaus-Jürgen Sembach, Ed. Office du Livre, Germany, 1971. Les Artistes de Montparnasse, J. Warnod, Ed. Mayer-Van Wilder, 1988, p. 47 (terracotta). Comments: Indenbaum studied at the Odessa school, then moved to Paris in 1911 to La Ruche, where he frequented Soutine, Kremègne and Chagall. Until 1919, he worked in the studio of Bourdelle, a former practitioner of Rodin. Indenbaum's sculpture follows the same logic as Maillol's: the model is derived from the ancient laws of proportion inherited from Greek classicism, robustness of form, all bound together in haughty purity.
