After serving the Emperor against the Turks (1566), Henri de Lorraine, known as le Balafré (1550-1588) played a leading role in France during the Wars of Religion. A fierce opponent of the Protestants, he took part in organizing the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre (1572), and subsequently the League (1575). During the Day of the Barricades (1588), he succeeded in rousing Paris against Henri III, who had to flee, but the king lured the Scarred Man to Blois, where he had him assassinated.
