ARNAUD SERVAL COLLECTION (lot 215 to lot 267)

Fascinated while leafing through a book on Australian Aboriginal art, Arnaud Serval decided, at the age of 19, to go and meet these peoples. He came back overwhelmed by the strength of their founding myths which give color and depth to their artistic creations and to their whole existence. The passion of a lifetime was born.

During his numerous trips to Australia, Arnaud Serval discovered the different communities of the Central Desert, the Kimberley and Arnhem Land. He gained the trust of great masters, holders of the knowledge of their region, who embraced him to be at their side and in their daily lives. He made emotional and spiritual connections with great artists such as Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Emily Kame Kngwarreye and Timmy Payungka Tjapangati, now deceased, or Johnny Warrangkula Tjupurrula.

The Yuendumu community even adopted him, thanks to his beautiful meeting with one of their leaders, Paddy Nelson Jupurulla, and of whom Arnaud became a "son" by taking the name of Tjakamarra. These privileged relationships allowed him to access, step by step, the secret knowledge of the Aborigines, and to discover some of the sacred sites that often appear in their art. For nearly two decades, Arnaud Serval has spent several months a year in the Australian bush, sharing the lives of his friends, renting spaces like the Life Center, where artists come and create. He also meets and frequents art center managers, gallery owners, museum curators and researchers.

In parallel to his travels, Arnaud is committed to making Aboriginal art better known and appreciated in France and in Europe. Since the 1990s, he has been part of a small circle of enthusiasts - collectors, men and women of science, from cultural or institutional backgrounds.

In collaboration with them, he has carried out several cultural and artistic projects focused on Aboriginal art. Over the years, he has organized numerous exhibitions in the Woo Mang gallery he created in Paris, as well as in many other prestigious places in France, Switzerland or Australia...
