Miniature padlock signed Joseph Bramah. - Lot 182
Miniature padlock signed Joseph Bramah.
2, 81 x 3, 01 cm.
Brass body, blued steel handle, and two very rare Bramah keys with complications. The diameter of the stem of the key of the Bramah padlock is only 4 mm yet it operates the mechanism of a pump with 7 bars. It is one of the very first padlocks signed by the inventor of the pump key locks, Joseph Bramah who filed the patent on August 21, 1784. In 1790, he exhibited an 18-bar lock with the challenge to open it without his key for a 200 guinea premium. This challenge was only taken up 67 years later by the American Alfred C. Hobbs during the 1851 World's Fair, where he opened, also by picking, a Chubb tumbler lock. This triggered the "great lock controversy" in the press in the second half of the 19th century. Proud Albion felt humiliated that a national of her colonies had defeated the jewels of two of her Majesty's suppliers, so locks were made combining the Chubb tumbler and the Bramah pump in the same key and other sophistications of the Bramah principle in the other two keys of the set.
Bramah Padlock , its key and two Bramah type keys with complications. This is one of the first miniature padlocks 2,7 x 3,2 cm signed Joseph Bramah who patented the first " pump " key cylinder on August 21st 1784. In 1790 he launched a chalenge to open one of his locks without its key for a reward of 200 Guineas. It remained closed for 67 years untill an american, Alfrerd C. Hobbs, opened it in 1851 as well as a Chubb lever lock. This started the " great lock controversy " of the second half of the 19th century. and locks with keys mixing ihe Chubb lever key with the Bramah key appeared in the UK and on the continent.with other refinements to the Bamah design, as in the two other keys of this lot.
In 1790 he started a Chalenge, to build a Schlösser without a Schlüssel for a house of 200 Guineas. The ring of this 62 mm long key is engraved R.B-T SGDG (Patented Without Government Guarantee). In its hollow shaft, 6.4 mm in diameter, is screwed a removable end cap carrying ten small bits free to turn around an axis. The rod has five slots all of the same depth. The words RESERVE, UNITE, DIZ..., CENT, MILLE are engraved on the rod above the slots. By screwing the tip, each slot is filled with the chosen number of small bits, thus determining the depth of the cut and the combination of the key, which can thus vary at will. The bow of this key is marked R.B SGDG (Patented Without Government Guarantee). A crew bearing 10 rotary rings is removable from the tip of the stem. The stem , diameter 6.4 mm has 5 slots of equal depths. In front of the slots, on the stem are the words RESERVE, UNITE, DIZ...,CENT., MILLE. While instaling the screw, each slot receives a chosen number of rings.thus defining each slot's new depth and thus the combination of,the key, changeable at xwll. This 62 mm long "nesting" key contains a second key with a diameter of 4 mm in its 7.5 mm shaft. Normally retracted by its spring, it comes out and stays out by the lateral locking of its operating pin. This 62 mm long "pull-out" key contains in its 7.5 mm diameter rod a second 4 mm diameter key. Normally retracted by its spring, it comes out and stays out by the lateral locking of its maneuvering pin. Normally, it is made of steel, but it can be removed from the frame and left in place by a simple locking mechanism.
